First steps in renovating the auditorium at the Suceava College of Arts
Fundația Umanitară ASSIST has officially launched the full-scale renovation of the auditorium at the “Ciprian Porumbescu” College of Arts in Suceava. After over two decades of intense use, the space had become technically and aesthetically outdated for today’s standards in artistic performance. This intervention directly addresses the need for modernization, aiming to transform the space into a high-quality educational and cultural venue that meets the expectations of both students and performers.
The renovation work was strategically scheduled during the summer break not to interrupt school activities. In the first weeks, the team removed all outdated structural elements: flooring, windows, doors, and seats. At the same time, the exterior hardware was replaced with new, soundproof windows and doors. The team is currently installing the metal framework to support the new seating.
Acoustics
One of the most critical components of the renovation is improving the hall’s acoustics, a fundamental requirement for any performance space. To achieve this, we chose materials considering the room’s dimensions and geometry. The project, developed by German architect Peter Eickholt, includes the installation of specialized acoustic panels that will minimize echo and ensure balanced sound distribution throughout the hall. The architectural plan follows high-end European standards.
Flooring
The old, noisy floor has been removed and will be replaced with a new surface made from durable, acoustically neutral materials. Flooring is provided by EGGER Romania, one of the key partners in this project. This change will improve sound quality and audience comfort. Additionally, the hall slope has been recalculated to ensure optimal visibility for all attendees.
Lighting
The lighting system will undergo a complete upgrade, featuring LED fixtures that allow for flexible adjustments tailored to each event. The lighting will be integrated into both the volumetric ceiling and the walls, balancing design with functionality. The lighting concept was designed and is being coordinated by Suceava-based designer Cezar Ciornei.
Ventilation and Heating
To ensure a comfortable indoor climate, we’ve selected a new HVAC system tailored for performance spaces. This setup will maintain air quality during events without interfering with acoustics. Ventilation ducts will be integrated into the ceiling and walls, allowing even air distribution throughout the hall.
Seating and Furniture
The old seats have already been removed and will be replaced with ergonomic models built from materials that preserve sound clarity. The current focus is on constructing the metal framework that will support the new seating layout, optimized for visibility and ease of access.
Next steps
In the upcoming weeks, work will continue on the electrical and ventilation systems, along with installing under-seat ductwork. Following this, we’ll begin assembling the stage structure and laying the new floor. Simultaneously, the radiators and ceiling ductwork will be installed, followed by the construction of the volumetric ceiling. In the final stage, we will complete the lighting installation, wall finishes, parquet flooring, curtains, and acoustic wall panels. The last step will be installing the new seats.
We thank all our partners who have supported the project so far: ASSIST Software, SERCOM Electric, EGGER România, NOVAOPTIC, architect Peter Eickholt, and designer Cezar Ciornei. This renovation is a key step in nurturing the artistic development of Suceava’s youth while providing the local community with a space fit for high-quality cultural events.
We are also grateful to every community member who has contributed through donations to this ambitious project. To bring it to completion, we continue to rely on financial support. Help us turn this vision into reality!
